1) Who can join the Marcus Color Guard?
Any student from entering freshman to incoming senior, who has an interest in dance, performance, and a positive, life-changing teamwork experience! Absolutely no prior dance or performance experience is required.
We also have a middle school color guard which meets for a few months after the fall season. The Marcus Middle School color guard is open to any student attending Briarhill, Lamar, or Downing Middle Schools. Look for more information on the main page of our website updated each fall season.
2) How do I join the Marcus Color Guard?
Interested students are invited to take part in any of the many activities held throughout the late fall through the spring to become involved with the Marcus Color Guard. 'Mini Camps' are held in the winter months to introduce basic dance and flag techniques and give students the chance to work with members of the Marcus Color Guard and their instructors. These clinics are open to anyone.
Our Marcus Middle School color guard offers a more in-depth preparation for the high school color guard. The Marcus Middle School Color Guard rehearses weekly during the winter months to learn skills and prepare for winter performances. Information for the Middle School Color Guard will be distributed at the middle schools in the late fall and posted on our website.
A formal audition is held in late spring, and 'audition clinics' are held prior to the formal audition to allow interested girls a chance to excel their new skills and to show-off their improvement throughout the process. Remember, many members of the color guard have had little or no dance experience before they came to one of our camps or clinics. These activities are truly designed to be an introduction to the Color Guard experience.
For more information on Mini Camps, Audition Clinics, or Audition dates, please visit the rest of our website or contact us with any additional questions.
3) When does the guard practice and perform?
During the fall, the Color Guard follows virtually the same schedule as the marching band, as it is part of the marching band's fall production. The band and Color Guard perform at Marcus Varsity football games, and at marching band contest shows held in various places throughout the state. During the winter and spring months the guard follows its own rehearsal and performance schedule, and competes at designated Winter Guard competitions generally held in North Texas but sometimes reaching as far as Houston, Austin, or San Antonio.
4) Where can I find out more information about Color Guard?
Visit other areas of our website, and check back monthly for flyers on upcoming events.
5) Why should I join the Marcus Color Guard?
Like any other extra-curricular activity, performing with the Color Guard requires hard work and dedication. Practicing and performing with the guard teaches students the valuable life skills of focused effort, determined and persistent work toward a common goal, and high-level team work. But most of all, it's fun!
Members of the Marcus Color Guard form friendships which last a lifetime. They become part of a tightly-knit group who look out for one another throughout their time in high school. They also develop a passion for performing which drives their work ethic to continually push them to be better.
